What is a well-woman exam?

Well-woman exams are a critical part of women’s health care. Schedule this annual visit to get preventive screenings and speak to the practice about any health concerns you may have.

Well-woman exams are important for women at all stages of life. Girls aged 13-15 benefit from visits that usually don’t include a pelvic exam but do help them to begin building a trusting relationship with a doctor and ask questions about their sexuality and reproductive system. Well-woman exams continue through her childbearing years and through adulthood, including post-menopause.

What happens during a well-woman exam?

Your well-woman exam includes important vital information, such as your weight, height, and blood pressure. You'll discuss any symptoms you might be experiencing that could be relevant to your visit. A thorough review of any symptoms or changes in your health history helps the doctors determine if you need additional health screenings. If you need any lab work that can be completed in-office, there's no need to visit another location.

A well-woman exam usually includes a pelvic exam, during which the doctor examines your cervix and vagina. If you’re due for a Pap smear, the doctor takes a swab of your cervix to gather a sample of cells to check for signs of cancer.

You’ll receive a clinical breast exam and a referral for a mammogram screening if you’re 40 or older, or if you’re at a higher risk of breast cancer due to family or personal history.

You can have all of your women's health needs managed with the quality care provided at A Plus Medical. Call the office to make an appointment or schedule one online at any time.
